There is a legend - perhaps true - that the famed Scots hero, Robert Bruce, became a leper.
Confusingly, Bruce's father had the same name. Some say that it was Bruce, the elder, who had leprosy.
This is the line they took in the movie.

I think this character was played by Ian McKellan.
