Jock is a male lowland gorilla. At the time I did this painting he was about to be shipped out to Bristol Zoo because an intractable quarrel had broken out between him and one of the female gorillas.
He would sit for about an hour at a time, crouching down with his hand on his chin, gazing into the distance.
