I recently read 'King Solomon's Mines'...Which I didn't like. This is an illustration of one of the characters. Those who know the book, may know the character. Those who don't, should read something else anyway.
Normally me too. But it's quite a short book. And I put myself through it because it's an important one in the history of popular narratives. HAGGARD's colonial attitudes are now out of fashion but the 'hero's quest' form of the story is one of our contemporary ideologies...Perhaps THE ideology of the West today.
Ush, Well, the blue is heat... Of course one cannot print it. And therefore cannot 'keep' it. It is a sensual illusion. The little drawing is 'mine' but the blue is not...
There was a TV documentary on Rider Haggard over Xmas. There were several talking heads on view. One among them was Eko Eshun, editor and critic, who is of African origin. He pointed out that KING SOLOMON"S MINES contains only 2 kinds of Africans, viz: nobles and savages. True, but they are doing marginally better than the white men - who come in only one kind -'reliable chaps'. They can, however, be differentiated by their shape. There is a thin one, a fat one, a tall one and so on. So, Dodos, if you can't remember much of them it is probably because there is little to remember. The plot is the usual thing.... Perhaps the only thing.

That's a freaky character and captured so well in your illustration. I haven't read the book since school but remember being creeped out by her.
