As you know the French use of 'Orientalism' refers to North Africans. Raja hates this phrase, feels it's deragatory. I find it kind of exotic which is probably exactly the attitude thats she's on about!
I assume your 'Oriental' experience is over? How was life working on a JerryBruckheimer blockbuster- was lunch eating crab off the backs of naked belly dancers ? How was working with Fritz?

Hello Matt,
Edward Said launched into 'Orientalism' some years ago. (Another form of beastly western imperialism it seems.) Ian Buruma's 'Occidentalism' is an interesting recent take upon this care-worn theme.
My sojurn in this wonderful country continues. At night I live like King Farouk; by day I slave on the chain gang of Western imperialism. (As usual, they are enemies of colour.)

Good thing when you do it! Have you been reading the ongoing explorations of Orientalism and the juste milieau at James Gurney's blog?

Do you have a link Eric? I am a bit out in the bush for web connections and I have never been in on the juste milieu.

This is Mr. Gurney's blog, I'd suggest going over to his list of topics and looking up "acedemic painting." Do you know James Gurney's work, like Dinotopia?
