I normally make several different files and improvise - very loosely - using square, rectangular, round and strip shaped tools. Then collage these together on my main file. Then I start re-painting to pull everything together. It's good to keep turning the image around to all 4 angles and work on it this upside-down and back-to-front way. I have little understanding of machinery but I admire the abstract beauty of machines.
